The TV Allowance device was invented in 1994 by Randal Levenson, a photographer who wanted help managing television usage by his young family.

Randal felt that his children were not aware of how much time they were spending in front of the television and playing video games. He wanted to be sure that they would have time for homework, reading, family time, and sports. And he was tired of constantly asking the kids to turn off the television.

Randal's idea was that if each of his children had a fixed number of hours that they were allowed to watch TV each week, that they could manage it on their own.

In 1996 Randal brought his first TV Allowance device to the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, and he won a "best of show" award. The TV Allowance was then featured on Oprah and Donahue, and was also covered on news programs on all of the national networks and on hundreds of local stations. The story of TV Allowance has also appeared in hundreds of newspaper articles.
